APA (NSW) Member Update – Paramedic Registration & Professional Indemnity Insurance

APA (NSW) Member Update

Paramedic Registration & Professional Indemnity Insurance

Monday 13 November 2017

Dear Member,

APA (NSW) has been extensively liaising with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the NSW Ministry of Health with respect to the expected commencement of paramedic registration in or around September 2018.

One of the key aspects of registration our members are particularly interested in is professional indemnity insurance (PII). We confirm that it is not envisaged, despite what you may have heard from the other Union, that paramedics working for NSW Ambulance will be required to take out their own personal PII. Instead, paramedics will be able to be covered by the employer’s PII (as you are right now) just like other registered practitioners including NSW Health nurses. The Ministry of Health has confirmed with us that current PII coverage provided for paramedics working for NSW Ambulance will continue to apply post registration.

It is also important to note that paramedics are exempted from being personally liable for any injury or damage when carrying out your duties in good faith under section 67I of the Health Services Act 1997. This exemption will continue to apply post registration. NSW Ambulance is vicariously liable for your negligence as an employee and have appropriate insurance to cover you. They are insured by the NSW Treasury Managed Fund (NSW Self Insurance Corporation Act 2004).

Rest assured, APA (NSW) will always look after our members. We will continue to advocate robustly for our members leading into the registration process.

Member updates and further information will be sent on a regular basis to ensure you are kept informed. In the meantime, we encourage you to read the comprehensive FAQ put together by AHPRA which provides further details for paramedics regarding registration. Alternatively, please do not hesitate to contact the APA (NSW) office.

Regards,

APA (NSW) Executive

Still No Uniform Solutions from NSW Ambulance

NSW Ambulance (NSWA) continues to bury their head in the sand when it comes to our uniform.

The current polyester uniform, including the short-sleeved shirt, has been causing work health and safety concerns for several members in hot and/or humid climates. This is unacceptable.

Paramedics take action against public sector wage cut

Today the Australian Paramedics Association (NSW) are commencing industrial action to stand against the announced wage cut by the Premier. For months, Paramedics and other essential workers put our lives and the lives of our families at risk to look after the people of New South Wales during the COVIID-19 Pandemic.

APA (NSW) appalled by NSW Premier plan to freeze our wages

The NSW Premier’s announcement to freeze the pay of public sector workers for 12 months is disgraceful. Paramedics and our frontline colleagues have been used, yet again, as scapegoats for this Government. We are praised as heroes for our hard work, and in the same breath served a pay cut that will ultimately send our wages backwards.
