APA (NSW) Member Update – Uniform

APA (NSW) Member Update

Monday 12 December 2016

Dear Member,

APA (NSW) would like to extend our thanks to the membership for the great response to our last member update regarding the inadequacies of the current operational uniform. The feedback the membership provided us has reinforced the view that the present state of the uniform is not fit for function in the many and varied environments in which the paramedics of NSW are required to operate.

Members from across the state report issues such as:

  • Heat retention leading to dehydration and negative impacts on work performance;
  • Incorrect sizing;
  • Local management impeding the procurement of suitable uniform items e.g. members have sought winter items and alternate uniforms due to allergic reactions and the increased prevalence of skin conditions;
  • Paramedics being subjected to public ridicule due to profuse sweating, as a consequence of the new uniform.

Recent developments in the consultative process regarding the uniform committee do not instill us with confidence that NSW Ambulance (NSWA) is genuinely concerned with rectifying the issues with the uniform. Despite repeated requests, NSWA has refused to allow the release of APA (NSW) delegates to attend the uniform committee on the 13 December 2016 in a face to face capacity, which does not enable consultation to take place in a meaningful way. Instead, NSWA has asked that our delegates teleconference into the meeting. This is despite other parties to the meeting attending face to face which we believe places APA (NSW) at a disadvantage. We have therefore declined to attend the meeting on these terms.

APA (NSW) is determined to impress the concerns of paramedics on NSWA and seek a proper resolution however we will not be consulting with NSWA unless we are certain that the consultation is genuine and meaningful. We are currently addressing our concerns with NSWA. We would like to reiterate our support for members who take reasonable steps in the workplace to ensure their comfort and safety. Should members identify additional concerns with uniforms, please contact your APA (NSW) delegates.

Still No Uniform Solutions from NSW Ambulance

NSW Ambulance (NSWA) continues to bury their head in the sand when it comes to our uniform.
The current polyester uniform, including the short-sleeved shirt, has been causing work health and safety concerns for several members in hot and/or humid climates. This is unacceptable.

Paramedics take action against public sector wage cut

Today the Australian Paramedics Association (NSW) are commencing industrial action to stand against the announced wage cut by the Premier. For months, Paramedics and other essential workers put our lives and the lives of our families at risk to look after the people of New South Wales during the COVIID-19 Pandemic.

APA (NSW) appalled by NSW Premier plan to freeze our wages

The NSW Premier’s announcement to freeze the pay of public sector workers for 12 months is disgraceful. Paramedics and our frontline colleagues have been used, yet again, as scapegoats for this Government. We are praised as heroes for our hard work, and in the same breath served a pay cut that will ultimately send our wages backwards.
